  • Duties Summary


    These positions are located in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, in the Resource Management and Science Division.

    Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

    The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for this park is April to September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2020


    Responsibilities

    Participates in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts. Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.) Conducts limited supervised excavation and testing of sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials. Duties include completing standard feature and level forms, screening soils to recover artifacts and performing flotation of soil samples. Processes specimens recovered in the field. Prepares specimens to be sent to dating laboratories. Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation. Maintains field equipment and supplies. Maintains related databases, forms, maps, and files. Performs data entry related to archeological artifact and project data (e.g., artifact information, catalog records, field notes, site records, etc.) into automated systems, appropriate forms, and archival records. Retrieves and compiles data as required for resource management reports, interpretive exhibits, etc.

    Area Information: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is located in northeast Pennsylvania and northwest New Jersey, along 40 miles of the Middle Delaware Scenic & Recreational River, encompassing approximately 70,000 acres in the two states. Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania is near the south end of the park and provides for adequate housing options and all major services. Housing availability exists throughout the 5-county area where the park is located. Summer season is often very warm and humid.     To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

    EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as , duties associated with performing uncomplicated technical archeological tasks under direct technical supervision of an archeological specialist; applies technical methods and procedures to perform routine archeological testing and monitoring tasks; knowledge of prehistoric and historic cultures of the Northeastern US; ability to utilize standard laboratory methods to prepare artifacts for testing, curation, and storage; ability and skill in using basic tools and equipment common to archeological functions; ability to conduct testing of sites through shovel excavations and screen materials for artifacts; ability to communicate information clearly and effectively; ability to conduct basic historical research; ability to utilize a computer to write brief technical reports summarizing findings of field work: . You must include hours per week worked.

    EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related fields. You must include transcripts.
    -OR-
    Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

    Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
    Education

    To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

    If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

    Physical Demands: Work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, stooping, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g. packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting and in the field. Survey and excavation work is typically performed in isolated areas; must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads. Exposure to biting insects (ticks, mosquitoes) and other field hazards can be expected.

    Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
