Baker II

Culinary Services (CS), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals for over 12,000 customers a day becoming an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CS proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, 9 retail operations, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery & Salads, and the Farm to Campus Program.

The dining halls serve over 10,000 meals per day and are open 7 days a week from 7am – Midnight providing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Late Night Bites. Specialty dinners are served multiple times a month highlighting Montana Made, holidays and other special events, and student/parent recipes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the management staff, the Baker II will supervise the Miller Commons Bakery while actively producing baked goods for those eating at the Commons. Duties include:

  • General training and oversight of bakery employees
  • Monitors menu, manages area’s inventory, and places orders as needed
  • Performs general baking duties such as:
    • Scaling, mixing, handling proofing and baking of both scratch and pre-made items from the MSU Bakery (examples: cakes, pies, cookies, other yeast products, etc)
    • Mixes all icing, puddings and toppings
    • Ices products (cakes, doughnuts, etc) and provides decorative garnishing of finished baked goods
    • Operates large scale and specialty bakery equipment

  • Recommends and tests new recipes
  • Interacts with the Health Inspector to ensure all sanitation guidelines are being followed
  • And contributes to the success of the department as an active member of the team while performing other duties as needed in support of the department’s mission.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • High volume and/or commercial baking experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience leading and/or training staff.
  • Experience providing excellent front line customer service.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience organizing and timing bakery production.
  • Experience with inventory control.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
  • Shift is Sunday – Thursday, 5:30am-2:30pm. Shift may change dependent on departmental need.
  • May occasionally work outside and in inclement weather assisting with special events.
