Duties Summary

This position is located at the Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, Hilo Campus, State Department of Defense. The program is part of a nationwide strategy to assist qualified high school dropouts, ages 16-18, to acquire values, skills, education, and self-discipline to become contributing members of society.

This position serves as the Maintenance Technician at the YCA Hilo Campus, and will be responsible for the custodial, building, and grounds maintenance for the program.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of basic practices and methods in the repair of buildings, including safety procedures; common practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical trades; cleaning methods, materials, and equipment; types of cleaners for various surfaces.

SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Ability to use the common tools utilized in a variety of building trades, handle minor mechanical repairs; read and interpret sketches and simple plans; understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate heavy industrial cleaning equipment, perform heavy lifting, moving, digging, and carrying; work cooperatively with others.

EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school.

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of work experience in performing a variety of building maintenance repair work.

Valid Driver’s License to operate a vehicle in the State of Hawaii.

Must pass criminal background check.

Other Information

This position is exempt from the civil service and considered temporary in nature. Therefore, if you are appointed to the position, your employment will be considered to be "at will", which means that you may be discharged from your employment at the prerogative your department head or designee at any time.

As a condition of employment with the State of Hawaii, each qualified candidate who has been given a conditional offer of employment must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination and shall be fully vaccinated by his/her/their employment start date.
