The Crowder lab is looking for a Research Scientist specializing in molecular biology and genetics to join the lab to work on NIH-funded research aimed at identifying mechanisms that protect from hypoxic cellular injury. The majority of the work will be performing genetic and molecular biology based experiments in the widely-used C. elegans experimental model. The C. elegans model has been used by the Crowder lab and other labs around the world to find genes that are required for death or survival after hypoxic injury. These genes are candidate therapeutic targets for human diseases where hypoxia is a core feature, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. Research projects include discovering additional genes that control hypoxic death/survival and include developing a better understanding of how the already identified genes function in hypoxic injury. The Crowder lab works closely with adjacent Van Gilst lab, which studies aging and hypoxic injury also in C. elegans.

Located within the Mitochondria and Metabolism Center on the South Lake Union campus, The Crowder lab is part of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington. Research in the laboratory focuses on understanding mechanisms of hypoxic injury and in collaboration with our neighbor, the Van Gilst Lab, aging. Our research model of choice is C. elegans, though we may occasionally carry out experiments in yeast or in mammalian models.

Research Responsibilities (100%)
The Research Scientist 1 will assist with research experiments involving the use of C. elegans, yeast, and/or mammalian models. This position will work under limited supervision and often in collaboration with other members of the lab.
  • Perform routine maintenance and handling of C. elegans strains
  • Assist with C. elegans mutagenic and drug screens
  • Generation of complex genotypic strains
  • Within scope of position, design and perform hypothesis-generating and hypothesis-testing experiments
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA cloning, PCR, Western blots, DNA/RNA gel electrophoresis
  • Assist with assay and protocol development
  • Precisely and faithfully document methods, protocols, results, analyses, and conclusions
  • Within scope of position, perform data analysis and present results to the lab, the PI, and assist with presentations to scientific meetings
  • Assist with manuscript writing
  • Ensure a safe and collegial working environment for yourself and others

    Minimum Required Qualifications
    Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics or related field
    Type and Years of Experience: 1 years’ experience in a laboratory setting

    Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:

  • Strong ability to read and use the scientific literature to advance the projects
  • Intellectual engagement with all of the projects in the lab and willingness to contribute ideas and constructive feedback to other lab members
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft suite of products, particularly, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Some experience with data analysis and statistics
  • Professional presentation of materials and oneself in all matters.
